Starting a business can be one of life’s most challenging – and rewarding – experiences. The uncertainty, the stress of long hours, the money questions…there are so many hurdles to be overcome. Now imagine going through all that in a new country where you don’t speak the language!
That was the reality for 2015 MOMpreneur® Award of Excellence nominee Anaida Deti. The CEO of Toronto’s Dental-X Smile Centre (and Registered Dental Hygienist) moved from Albania with little more than her dreams, and along with her husband, started a new life from scratch.
But the courage and dedication shown by Anaida – with the support of her family – should serve as inspiration for anyone with dreams of their own. We interviewed Anaida and spoke about the hard work required to build a business, the sacrifices needed to make it a success and what the future might hold for her and Dental-X Smile Centres.
How did you become an entrepreneur?
When my husband and I came to Canada 12 years ago with no English and $500.00 in our pocket, having my own office seemed a dream far from reality.
I think when you really want something, there is no such thing as impossible!
As the years passed, working very hard 6-7 days a week while going to school with my son being an infant, seemed even more impossible. Every day I felt that having my own office is what I wanted. It took some hard work but my dream became reality in May 2013.
Can you describe a typical day? Is there such a thing?
I work 6 days a week, very long days. After dropping off my son to school at 8:30am, I drive to work and I do not leave the office till 7 or 8pm, sometimes even later. Except seeing patients throughout the day, I have to deal with paperwork, office/staff/patients issues, and everything else around the office.
Who do you count on for help? Do you have a network of family to answer the call?
My family has always been a great supporter, I know I can always count on them, especially my husband and my mother in-law. My husband has always supported my ideas and actions no matter what, and my mother in-law has been a great help at home with my son and housekeeping. I could have never done this without them!
Have you had to make sacrifices to see the business succeed?
I would definitely say yes. I have to always sacrifice family time due to work.
What’s the best part about owning your own business?
In the business I am in, it’s important to treat the patients the way I want to treat them, the way I think it is right to treat them! In my office our motto is “Treat everybody, the way you want to be treated”. When I used to work in other offices, and I saw some things that I thought were not right, I used to say “If I ever have my office, I would never do this” and I kept my promise.
What do you do on a day off? Do you even know what a day off is?
In theory my only day off is Sunday. But even on Sundays I usually have to answer calls and emails.
What does the future look like for you and the company?
My future goals are to have Dental-X Smile Centres throughout the GTA. I just got a second location that will be opened for business in January 2015.
And also I am very happy to announce that I will be a mom for the second time in the beginning of next year.
Who’s another entrepreneur that inspires you?
I do not have a name that I can say but everyday people inspire me. Their life stories, their struggles and their successes definitely inspire me!
They make me want to be a better me!
Are you active in your community? What does supporting local mean to you?
I love to help the community! The community means so much to me! Especially I love to help people that need it the most! I have developed a program called Mission KIND to help kids from 6-16 to get free dental work. Especially we do this during the Christmas season. Also every year close to Valentines Day, we provide free dental work to families in need. We try to help the community when we can!
Any tips for moms thinking of starting a business?
I know it is very hard but it is all worth it at the end!
