It can be tough to motivate yourself to exercise more and take better care of yourself. Sometimes what you really need is a coach who will do whatever it takes to ignite that spark inside of you!

I interviewed Maurice Williams, the brains and brawn behind Move Well Fitness. Maurice is passionate about health and exercise and wants to help his clients achieve the best lives that they can through improving their diets and moving more.

Maurice is very optimistic about the future of his business – and it sounds like he is right to be! Hear his story in his own words below!

Tell us about your business in as much detail as you can. What is it that you do and who are your customers?

My business involves changing people’s lives. I literally help them to be more confident, feel better about how they look in the mirror, give them more energy, and really get their youth back. I do this through coaching fitness and nutrition.

What made you choose this path? Is it a family legacy or are you a pioneer? Did you go to school for it or are you learning as you go?

I love the human body. I love how God made it and how intricate it is. The human body is made to move. I teach my clients all the time to just move more, whether that means parking farther away from your destination, getting up during commercial breaks and walking around your house, or just going for a long evening walk. If we just move more, sleep more, and eat a little better, we can solve a lot of our country’s health issues.

As a result of my love for moving, I chose this career. I’m the first in my family. I did go to school for it (undergrad & grad school.)

They say that to be successful you have to be passionate, so share what drives you every day. Why do you love what you do?

What drives me every day is how something as simple as exercise (as compared to medicine and operations, etc.) can totally keep you moving for a long time with little to no setbacks. I also love helping people realize that exercise can be fun – it does not have to be super intense and it will make them feel and look great!

Has it been smooth sailing or have you overcome adversity to get where you are?

This is a funny question. I’ve had lots of adversity, too much to list here. Here’s the short story: I lost a facility prior to the one I have now. I lost 15K. I had to do a Go Fund Me Campaign to recoup some of the money. I’ve had to borrow money from friends and family to pay bills once.  I’ve sacrificed time with my wife and kids to get this business going and to move toward my picture of success. By the grace of God, I have a chance to be more successful. I’m not where I want to be, but I’m closer than I’ve ever been!

We all know that crazy happens. What’s the wildest thing that’s happened on the job?

The wildest has been having a studio one day and then, a couple days later, being released from it. That happened to me last year after working on getting it up and running for most of 2015.

What do you do with your time off? Are you familiar with that concept?

Ha! Time off? What’s that? My mind really never takes time off. I’m constantly thinking of my business, with it being five weeks open (my fitness studio that is, I’ve been in business as a fitness trainer for around 20 years.) When I do take time off, I’m with my family or just relaxing and playing video games on my tablet. I’m truly a simple guy, a homebody.

This is the age of the social network. How important is social media to your business and how do you make it work?

Social media is huge! There are so many of my potential customers on it. I use Facebook ads & weekly postings. I’m on Twitter, Google +, and Linkedin. Truthfully,  it’s a lot to keep up with.

How are you involved in your community?

I recently became a part of our listserve and will join our community association. I will be an active part of the community where my fitness studio is located. In 2017, I’ll be doing tons of free and low-cost seminars to educate the community!

What does supporting local mean to you?

Supporting local to me means shopping and developing alliances with my fellow business owners, as well as offering them my services.  The community where my studio is located is all about that.

What does the future look like for you and your business?

The future is bright, baby! In one year, I will have an administrative assistant and two trainers. In three years, I’ll have the same, plus one more trainer and a lead trainer. In five years, I’ll have the same, plus one more trainer and a manager. I’ll be out of training and just running the business within three years!

Do you have any advice for aspiring business owners just starting out?

Yes, hire a coach! It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Make sure the coach is in the same field as you and is where you want to be. Also, make sure you’re passionate and are willing to work long hours, for free sometimes, to grow your business. Make your business a brand too, not just another business!
